Samsung has unveiled a new solar powered mobile phone.

The Blue Earth touchscreen smartphone features a solar panel back to provide power.

Other green features include casing made from recycled water bottles - a move that echoes Motorola’s Renew handset.

The charger is energy efficient, whilst both the handset and the charger are free from harmful chemicals including Brominated Flame Retardants, Beryllium and Phthalate.

New Blue Earth handsets are packaged in recycled cardboard.

Eco-mode reduces screen brightness, whilst the backlight automatically turns off after a few seconds to save battery life.

An ‘eco-walk’ function counts user steps and works out how much carbon they’ve saved compared to if they’d taken the car.

JK Shin, Executive Vice President and Head of Mobile Communication Division at Samsung Electronics, said: “‘The Blue Earth Dream’ demonstrates our small but meaningful commitments for the future and our environment.”

The Blue Earth will be availabe in the UK sometime during the second half of this year.

It is currently on display at the Mobile World Congress in Barcelona.
