After Skype released its native client for the iPhone, Yahoo is planning to release its very own. Unfortunately, Yahoo’s version of its messenger on the Mac isn’t that inspiring. Its been around for years yet it still doesn’t support features such as video conferencing. So, it’s very intriguing what Yahoo is going to do with its iPhone version.

Yahoo announced the release of the app at CTIA Wireless 2009 and has posted a video of the app in action on their blog. In the video, you can see most of its showcased features. It can send and receive instant messages, show contacts and their statuses, change the users’ own status (and even make the status invisible), see an archive of recent conversations, and send and receive pictures or even free text messages.

Given the tie-up between Microsoft and Yahoo with regards to their messenger networks, there’s a strong likelihood that Yahoo Messenger for the iPhone will allow you to strike up a conversation with your buddies on the Live Messenger network as well.
